Burkholderia cepacia complex can spread through contact with contaminated surfaces or exposure to it in the environment, as well as by person-to-person contact. Symptoms of an infection depend partly on how a person who acquires it is doing in terms of their initial health upon contact. Some people experience no symptoms while others develop pneumonia, fever, shortness of breath, increased sputum, coughing, chills, redness, swelling, and pain at an infection site.

While healthy individuals exposed to products with B. cepacia may only suffer a local infection, Burkholderia cepacia complex can cause serious, life-endangering infections in some situations; when contaminated products are used by immunosuppressed people and those caring for immunosuppressed people, an infection could spread to the bloodstream and cause sepsis, which is life-threatening.

Among the products involved in the DermaRite recall are 4-N-1, DermaCerin, DermaFungal, DermaKleen, DermaMed, DermaSarra, Gel Rite, Hand E Foam, KleenFoam, Lantiseptic, PeriGiene, PeriGuard, Renew Dimethicone, Renew Periprotect, Renew Skin Repair, and UltraSure. These products were distributed around the country.

The company has told its customers and distributors to take a look at their inventory right away and destroy the affected products.

It may be appropriate to bring a product liability lawsuit if you are injured or a loved one dies as a result of a contaminated DermaRite product like DermaKleen or Renew Skin Repair. Product liability lawsuits may be brought when a product is defective in terms of its design, manufacturing, or marketing. Generally, design flaws exist in all units of a product and involve a flaw in the formulation of a product that makes the product unreasonably dangerous. In most cases, marketing defects are flaws in the information that comes with a product; failure to warn is a common marketing defect.

Manufacturing defects are typically one-off problems with how a unit or batch of units were made. So, for example, if a product became contaminated with B. cepacia in the course of manufacturing, and the microbial contamination wasn’t integral to how the product is made, the product may have a manufacturing defect.

If you or a loved one was injured as a result of one of the affected DermaRite products listed above, call the seasoned Chicago-based product liability lawyers of Moll Law Group to determine whether you have a basis to sue for damages.  When our firm is able to establish a manufacturer’s liability for injuries or wrongful death, we may be able to recover damages, which vary by state.
